Bauhaus and its sites in Dessau and Weimar
The symbol of modern architecture and art
What once began as a college is now an important milestone of modernism: through plans by architect Walter Gropius to revolutionize the architectural art, the Bauhaus building was established in Dessau in 1926. Many romantic, distracting details were now turned into practicality in minimalist style. This building and the master houses, where masters like Gropius lived, have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1996. Since 2017, the five "Laubenganghäuser" (housing estate with balcony access), symbolic of social housing, have been included. The Bauhaus Museum, which opened in 2019, offers a comprehensive insight into the history. There are also other Bauhaus-style World Heritage Sites in Weimar and Bernau.
