Elbe River Landscape
The union between nature and culture
The UNESCO biosphere reserve, which was designated in 1997, stretches along the Elbe from Lauenburg to Wittenberg, covering an area of 2,822 km². A large part of this reserve is located in Saxony-Anhalt and is known as the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. What is special here is that it includes three other UNESCO sites: the Luther memorials, the Garden Kingdom and Bauhaus. In addition to important habitats such as bodies of water, forests, grassland, moors and heaths, the floodplain area is also home to the native Elbe beaver and rare bird species. Visitors can find out all about the nature reserve at the Auenhaus information centre.
