Gerhard Geyer "Matthias Grünewald "

A memorial for the artist

Gerhard Geyer

Gerhard Geyer created a sculpture for the Renaissance painter and graphic artist Matthias Grünewald to commemorate Grünewald's connection to and artistic work in Halle. Grünewald had worked on the interior decoration of Halle Cathedral under Cardinal Albrecht. Grünewald realised a panel painting for this purpose. It depicts two saints: Mauritius, the main patron saint of the archbishopric of Magdeburg, and Erasmus, patron saint of the princely house from which the cardinal came. Today, this panel painting is in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and is one of the artist's most important works. Gerhard Geyer, who studied sculpture under Gustav Weidanz at Burg Giebichenstein from 1930 to 1933, depicts the artist Grünewald in a regal seated posture. Instead of the typical royal regalia, Geyer equips the artist with brushes and a colour mixing palette.
