Giebichenstein Bridge
Across the Saale with cow and horse
The Giebichenstein Bridge, also known as the Kröllwitz Bridge, was built in its current form between 1926 and 1928. To the right and left of the arch of the concrete bridge are two animal sculptures designed by the artist and former castle professor Gerhard Marcks - a cow and a horse. These symbolise the connection between the then rural Kröllwitz and the urban district of Giebichenstein and also serve as icebreakers to protect the main seawall arch. As one of three Saale crossings, the Giebichenstein Bridge still plays a central role in Halle's road network today and is also used as an impressive jumping platform for Halle's bridge jumping.
