Harz Geopark
450 million years of history are hidden here
Anyone interested in geology should not miss out on this breathtaking landscape: With an area of over 9,600 km², the UNESCO Geopark in the Harz Mountains, Braunschweig and Eastphalia is the largest in Germany and a very popular destination for nature lovers. It has been a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015. Here, for example, you can marvel at valuable mineral resources, fossils and geotopes in abundance. Even the poet and thinker Goethe recognised the special nature of this unique area and visited the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, which at 1,141 metres is the highest mountain there and a highlight of the geopark.
