Leopoldina - German National Academy of Sciences
Building bridges between science and society
Its history began in 1652 when four doctors founded it in Schweinfurt: the Leopoldina, one of the oldest academies of science in the world. After its seat always followed the place of residence of the respective president, it found its home in Halle (Saale) in 1878. In 2008, it was named the National Academy of Sciences and has been advising politics and society ever since. In 2012, it moved into its headquarters on Jägerberg. Behind the doors of the white neoclassical building, its eventful history is revealed: secret rooms of the Freemasons, who laid the foundation stone for the building in 1820, a cinema hall of the Red Army and a former canteen bear witness to the zeitgeist of previous owners.
