Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg
The birth of the Lutheran church
The Protestant Reformation in 1517: The monk Martin Luther turned Christianity upside down. His 95 theses, which he developed due to the Church's sale of indulgences, revolutionised the thinking of many. They can still be seen today at the Castle Church. He developed these theses in the Luther House, where he lived for many years. He usually preached his sermons in the town church. A visit to the residence of his important companion Phillip Melanchton (Melanchton's House), is worthwile. Here it is possible to recreate his lifestyle interactively. In Eisleben you can admire his birthplace and last residence. All these sites were recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1996.
