Murals by Josep Renau in Halle-Neustadt
Cultural heritage of the GDR
In Halle-Neustadt, a planned city based on the socialist model, there are numerous works of art on buildings, in green spaces and in fountains. This is no coincidence, as works of art were also used to convey political ideology in the GDR. Two works of art of monumental size (7 x 35 metres each) can be found at Am Stadion 5: the murals "The forces of nature and technology controlled by man" and "Unity of the working class and the founding of the GDR" by Josep Renau were created between 1968 and 1974. After reunification, many GDR artworks were destroyed through decay and demolition, partly due to a lack of appreciation of the works. However, the art of the GDR is also part of Germany's cultural heritage and Renau's works were extensively restored in 2005 and 2021 and can now be admired at any time.
