The new theatre, in the heart of the city centre, offers a diverse repertoire ranging from classics and comedies to contemporary plays and world premieres. The main venues of the new theatre are the Great Hall, the Chamber (each with spacious foyers) and the Shop Window as well as the Court Theatre, which is open during the summer season and in the run-up to Christmas. The theatre director at the time, Peter Sodann, came to Halle in 1980 and was looking for a venue for the acting ensemble. The former "Cinema of German-Soviet Friendship" in Große Ulrichstraße developed into a unique and programmatically distinctive communicative centre in the heart of Halle.
