"Stadtgottesacker" City Cemetery
A place of tranquillity and an architectural gem of the Renaissance
The cemetery complex, completed in 1594, is still a unique Renaissance masterpiece in Northern Europe. Master builder Nickel Hoffmann modelled it on the Italian Camposanto. 94 sandstone arches, decorated with ornaments, frame the courtyard-like area. Behind the walls on the city cemetry, between ivy and under stately trees, lie the final resting places of Halle personalities for centuries: for example Christian Thomasius, co-founder of the University of Halle (Saale), August Hermann Francke, founder of the Francke Foundations, and the parents of the composer George Frideric Handel.
