Wandbilder von Josep Renau

In Halle-Neustadt, a planned city based on the socialist model, there are numerous works of art on buildings, in green spaces or fountains. This is no coincidence, because works of art were also used in the GDR to convey political ideology. Two works of art of monumental size (each 7 x 35 metres) can be found at Am Stadion 5. The murals "The forces of nature and technology controlled by man" and "Unity of the working class and founding of the GDR" by Josep Renau were created between 1968 and 1974. After the fall of communism, many GDR works of art were destroyed by decay and demolition, partly due to the lack of appreciation of the works. However, GDR art is also part of Germany's cultural heritage and Renau's works were extensively restored in 2005 and 2021 and can now be admired at any time.
