Lanterns, lanterns, sun, moon and stars: the Lantern Festival traditionally takes place in Halle (Saale) on the last weekend of August each year. It is one of the most beautiful folk and local festivals in central Germany. Thousands of people light up picturesque places along the Saale with shining lanterns and sparkling eyes. At the annual Lantern Festival, which was celebrated for the first time in 1928, the whole of Halle really does seem to be out and about, streaming through the magical floodplain landscape of the Saale together with curious visitors from near and far. Visitors can expect a varied program, numerous exhibition stands and impressive stage shows. One of the highlights is the lantern parade.
