Francke Foundations

From a baroque school town to a unique educational cosmos

Francke Foundations

The Francke Foundations are a place of learning and togetherness steeped in history. August Hermann Francke founded a school for the poor here in 1698. His good deed and pietistic values gave rise to a school town in the centre of Halle (Saale). Over 50 educational institutions are gathered here: With a scenery library, plant garden and city choir, they create a unique cultural and scientific institution of European standing. The historic orphanage is still the heart of the foundations today: Here you can discover special and permanent exhibitions, admire treasures in the art and natural history collection and celebrate festivals.
