Memleben
Small community with romantic monastery complex
A visit to the small community of Memleben with its 500 inhabitants is well worthwhile. There is an old Benedictine monastery from the tenth century, which was founded by Emperor Otto II and his Byzantine wife Theophanu. Both the monumental church from the tenth century and the early Gothic church ruins, the fully preserved late Romanesque crypt and the monastery garden convey impressions of Benedictine monastic life. Opposite the romantic monastery complex, the animal and leisure park is another of the municipality's attractions. Tigers, fur seals and parrots, for example, can be marvelled at in the 35,000 square metre area. There are also attractions such as a looping railway and a giant swing.
