Forstwerder nature reserve
Our insider tip
Relax on the riverbank with the sound of the weir in your ears: The northern end of the Saale promenade invites you to do just that. Our insider tip: From here, you can cross the neighbouring Forstwerderbrücke bridge, also affectionately known as the "Katzenbuckelbrücke", to reach the island of the same name. The dense floodplain forest provides a habitat and breeding ground for numerous animal species, which is why it is a nature reserve and can only be explored in parts. On the Saale side, enchanted riverbanks enchant the eye with strange root formations and weeping willows that reach down to the ground. Opposite, meanwhile, the river traffic of the Trotha lock can be observed at close quarters, from canoes to passenger boats. But don't forget to wave!
