Hallmarkt with Göbel Fountain
The centre of salt production
The view sweeps from the Göbel Fountain, over the countless cobblestones of the Hallmarkt, to the former main substation at the foot of the Blue Towers of the Market Church. A marvellous picture. Where Halle's city history once began, you can now find it depicted on the edge of the fountain - in the form of creative bronze figures or written in the books of the city library, which is located right next door. A beautiful setting for a place so steeped in tradition. Four medieval wells for brine extraction once stood here, the "Valley of Halle" was the territory of the salt workers and the centre of salt extraction in Halle (Saale) for centuries.
