Market Square with Handel Monument
Heart of the City
As in the Middle Ages, Halle's Market Square is a hub and trading centre in the heart of the city. Where tram lines cross today, horse-drawn carriages once travelled. A total of 14 streets lead to the square, where people meet at the vegetable stall for their weekly shop or enjoy a coffee amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. For centuries, the four towers of the Market Church and the Red Tower on the square have characterised the silhouette of the "City of Five Towers". The bronze statue of Halle (Saale)-born composer George Frideric Handel has been an eye-catcher and meeting point since 1859. Incidentally, if you follow Handel's gaze, you are looking in the direction of London, his adopted home.
